Asia-Europe Shipping Lines Aim High

Carriers on the Asia–Europe trade are pushing through significant rate hikes from early June in a bid to arrest a dramatic collapse in spot rates, despite ongoing weakness in demand and rising signs of market saturation.

Since the start of the year, spot prices have dropped sharply, driven by softening volumes and a sharp imbalance between available capacity and actual demand. Although some lines are now setting new Freight All Kinds (FAK) levels at more than twice current market rates, the fundamental pressures on the trade remain unresolved.

Rates on the Asia–North Europe route have plunged from peak levels at the end of 2024, and Asia–Mediterranean lanes have seen similar declines. Despite this, multiple shipping lines have issued notices of steep increases for early June, a move aimed at stemming further deterioration, but one that may prove difficult to enforce in an oversupplied environment.

Capacity Floods In, Demand Fails to Follow

The core issue is structural. Vast amounts of new vessel capacity continue to enter the market, much of it destined for Asia–Europe lanes due to the size of ships being delivered. At the same time, carriers have scaled back blank sailings for May, deploying record levels of weekly space and contributing further to downward pricing pressure.

Only a small percentage of available capacity is being withheld, leaving the trade awash with space that far outstrips shippers' current requirements. And while some volumes have recently been diverted from Asia–US routes to Europe, due to shifting tariff dynamics, this has had limited impact in rebalancing the market. However, it is adding to congestion challenges at key European ports, which may tie up capacity - though this impact may do little to change market balance.

Northern Europe’s primary gateways are already under strain, grappling with labour shortages, public holidays, port disruptions and terminal maintenance that have caused extended delays. With more holidays and cargo now arriving, those pressures are likely to intensify as the summer approaches.
