Turning Supply Chain Chaos into Control

Trade growth continues but supply chain is the differentiator

Global trade remains resilient, with UK PMI still firmly above market expectations, but the conditions supporting growth are becoming increasingly complex.

Goods trade exceeded $26 trillion in 2025, yet the outlook for 2026 points to slower expansion as cost pressures, disruption and regulatory uncertainty reshape the operating environment.

For businesses, growth is no longer dependent on stable conditions. It is being driven by the ability to adapt quickly and maintain control in a more volatile landscape.

Recent developments highlight how fluid the regulatory environment has become. The EU–US trade agreement has been approved with safeguards and review mechanisms, while the UK-US trade agreement’s position remains in abeyance, leaving uncertainty around tariffs and compliance requirements.

As a result, trade agreements are no longer fixed enablers, they are evolving frameworks that require monitoring and adjustment.

Disruption and cost pressure become systemic

Operational disruption continues to reshape global supply chains. The Middle East situation is tightening capacity, extending transit times and increasing reliance on alternative routes and multimodal solutions.

At the same time, cost pressure is building across transport, labour and customs compliance. Nearly half of supply chain leaders were anticipating moderate to significant cost increases before the Middle East crisis!

Inventory strategies have also been shifting, with around 44% of businesses increasing stock levels. However, their buying cycles have tightened, with orders placed later but expected to arrive faster. This reduced tolerance for disruption is now being tested, as delays today risk translating into availability gaps in the coming weeks.

Adaptability drives confidence

Despite these challenges, businesses remain confident. This confidence is rooted in capability rather than conditions.

Around 46% of companies have been planning to use new trade routes, with a further 23% actively evaluating alternatives. Success increasingly depends on:

• Rapid route adjustment
• Cost control under pressure
• Maintaining flow during disruption
• Navigating evolving regulatory requirements

Logistics is now central to commercial performance.
