UK Trade Agreements: Easing Friction, Enabling Growth
In May 2025, the UK signed new trade agreements with three of its most important global partners — the European Union (19 May), the United States (8 May) and India (6 May).
These agreements introduce a series of changes aimed at reducing trade friction, simplifying border processes, and improving market access.
For businesses trading across multiple sectors — from manufacturing and retail to eCommerce and food — these developments bring both immediate benefits and long-term potential. Logicall clients across the UK and EU are particularly well-placed to respond and adapt.
UK–EU Agreement: Welcome Relief for Border Trade
The UK’s new agreement with the EU marks a clear step forward in post-Brexit relations. Most notably, the deal removes the vast majority of routine border checks on shipments of animal and plant products moving between the UK and EU, dramatically easing friction for food and agri-based supply chains.
While the agreement currently focuses on foodstuffs, it reflects a broader intention to reduce red tape and improve flow across shared borders. For businesses that rely on regular and reliable UK-EU trade, especially those with just-in-time or temperature-sensitive supply chains, this could significantly improve speed and service levels.
UK–US: Industrial Gains, More to Follow
The UK’s agreement with the United States provides targeted relief on tariffs for selected sectors. Tariffs on UK steel and aluminium have been scrapped, and taxes on UK car exports have been cut for up to 100,000 units annually — measures that support advanced manufacturing and industrial supply chains.
However, a 10% blanket tariff remains in place for most UK goods, and there is still uncertainty around key consumer sectors such as clothing, electronics and home goods. While this deal stops short of a full trade agreement, it lays the groundwork for deeper collaboration and tariff reform in the future.
UK–India: New Opportunities for Importers and Exporters
The new UK–India trade deal, the most comprehensive bilateral agreement signed by the UK since Brexit, will open up opportunities for both importers and exporters once it comes into force (expected within a year).
The agreement lowers UK tariffs on Indian products such as clothing, footwear, jewellery and processed foods — categories that support both retail and eCommerce markets. At the same time, UK exports including high-value cars, food products, cosmetics, and technical equipment will benefit from reduced Indian tariffs and streamlined customs procedures.
India’s fast-growing middle class represents a valuable growth opportunity for UK and EU businesses looking to expand into new markets.
Looking Ahead: More to Come
The UK has also confirmed that it is pursuing new trade agreements with Gulf states including Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar — a further indication that trade diversification and global alignment will continue to shape policy in the months ahead.
